Celebrating innovation as one of its core values in tackling extreme poverty, Sawa World is joining forces with Uganda’s Social Innovation Academy (SINA) to build a unique plastic bottle structure for the new Solution Centre in Kampala. Like Sawa World, SINA finds exceptional approaches to address severe poverty by empowering youth to become job creators.

Millions of plastic bottles litter the Ugandan countryside, fouling the sky when burned, releasing toxic pollutants and destroying resources. But SINA entrepreneurs collect and fill bottles with dry soil, creating valuable ‘upcycled’ bottle bricks used to build beautiful, environmentally friendly homes.

“This building will serve several functions including a demonstration of SINA’s innovative work, construction of a large clay fuel-saving stove (one of our solutions), and training in cooking and other related solutions such as pineapple jam,” says Sawa founder Daphne Nederhorst. “We will also use the vibrant building for team lunches and to host visitors.”

The SINA team will offer regular drop-in sessions that encourage youth to discover new creative innovations, such as floor tiles created from eggshells and plastic bags and fashion-ware styled from waste bags.
